Ever so faint positive test.

Taken May 27, 2012 first thing in the morning.

It is said that there is no possibility of a false positive result on a pregnancy test. This is a photo of mine at 1.5 weeks after ovulation. I had taken one a few days before and the result was negative. I was bummed and got wasted for a couple days as is my usual way of handling disappointment.  Then I tried again and got a barely noticeable second pink line! Goes to show how just a tiny bit of HGC hormone can begin to show up on a urine-based test. FYI, a healthy pregnancy HCG count should double every day you are "with child".

Week "5"

So far, so good. I am officially one week past a missed period. I have stopped drinking my regular one alcoholic bev a day and am anxiously awaiting some fun signs of a healthy pregnancy. No "morning sickness" yet, and I know I will eat these words soon, but I am ready to get some cuz it's supposed to mean your hormones are doing their thing and creating the parts deep inside to allow the big bunch of baby cells to grow and thrive.
Now I am on the lookout for a good Midwife or OBGYN who will be willing to let me try a VBAC when (if) the time comes. Nova was born (c-section) in Denver under the Kaiser medical system. This time around we have a UCSF-based medical group as our primary family care (under coverage of Aetna Insurance). I am taking any and all advice from San Francisco Bay Area women on recommended prenatal care. Comment here please. Thanks!

"4" Weeks, No Jinx!

I'm going to begin again. Three years after I first began writing this blog. I won't publish any posts until I am quite sure this new pregnancy is viable. It will be my little secret for (hopefully) a few more weeks. And then (hopefully) I can let the world know our big news.
Brett and I have tried for another baby the last 5 months and now it seems we have been successful! Today I am 4 weeks pregnant, meaning of course, actually only 2 fetal age weeks. If this sticks and all goes well, I'll be going to a midwife or OB doc next month. I know I should be more nervous because we have had 2 miscarriages since 2008 - 1 a year before Nova was born and another 1 year after she was born. That second one may have been twins but, at about 7 weeks, growth stopped with no heartbeat(s). I had to have a D&C the week before Christmas. It was sad and really spooked Brett. So it took another full year for him to be ready to try again.
Here we are the last day of May, 2012! And I am not so nervous, but rather very excited! I hope this mother's intuition is telling me that there is nothing to worry about; that this pregnancy will last and the tiny poppy seed embryo inside me will be healthy and perfect. Oh please let this be true! I want another baby so bad! A little sibling for Nova and a child to love me as much as Nova loves her daddy. Fingers crossed....
Not publishing this yet. Saving as a draft until further notice. So as not to Jinx the situation. Stay tuned!

Week 39- The Birth Story

This was the last photo taken of my belly before my baby was born three days later. A friend from Mexico said that it reminds her of a modern-day Virgin de Guadalupe portrait. I think the Christmas lights shone through and woke up my baby girl. I went into labor later that night when the contractions started.

I went to work the next day (Monday, Dec 7) and the contractions got steady and became painful that night. Brett and I timed them and got some rest until they were seven minutes apart and hurting bad. (This picture is of my labor necklaces that the girls at my baby shower made for me for strength. I'm also wearing my wedding bands as a necklace because my fingers were swollen from pregnancy.)
We went to the hospital after midnight. It was now Tuesday morning 1am when we got there. But I was not at all dilated so they sent me home with an Ambien to sleep. By 10am I could not stand the pain any longer and we went back to St Joseph's. Still not dilated and my doctor ordered five more Ambien and sent me home again! I don't remember much more of this day. But Brett says I would pass out between contractions and then wake up screaming in agony every five to seven minutes. I remember Brett reading to me in the bathtub. He was so sweet and took great care of me. We went back that night after midnight again. It was now Wed morning 1:30am and finally I was dilated 4 centimeters!!! So I was admitted and I begged for an epidural, screaming and I tried to bite Brett's finger off when he was trying to help me count my breathing exercises. Poor Brett - so tired and now getting abused by my madness! When the epidural kicked in I was happy and ate a popcicle.
I slept through the night and by mid-morning I was 9 centimeters dilated. But the epidural was not working well, and my water had not broken. So a doctor broke my amniotic sack and they gave me a new epidural and they also gave me pitocin to dilate me the last centimeter. After a few more hours, and the second epidural, I began to have a fever that was spiking, so.... A C-Section was ordered. I begged to be able to first call my mother! Then, I was transfered to a gurney, and rushed to an operating room. Brett tried to keep up with the quickly-moving team of doctors and nurses who were trying to dress him in scrubs while he ran. He also had to roll the two suitcases with him cuz we he was told they could not stay in the birthing room. I had a spinal, was laid out arms and legs wide as if about to be crucified, then... I heard Brett cry out "Oh my god! She's coming out!" And Nova was in his arms and they were standing over me and I could barely open my eyes, let alone reach out a hand to touch her.
Brett was rushed into a nearby room, where he held this 7 lb 6 oz baby girl for about 45 minutes while I was getting sewn up. He said she kept making sucking motions with her mouth as if wanting to drink some milk, but he had none so he felt bad. And also he felt completely alone with her and perhaps not worthy of the responsability. But I am so glad that she spent this first hour of her life with him. To this day (I am finally finishing this blog post 19 months later) Brett is still the shining light in Nova's eyes. She loves him more than anything else in the world. Anyone can see that.
Nova, Brett and I spent two nights in the hospital. Then we went home and lived together happily ever after. The End.

Week 37

Doctor said I was already 80% effaced, meaning my cervix is almost thinned out enough to open up. Don't ask for details on this. I do not have the motivation to explain it. Brett went to New Daddy Bootcamp class. He changed a two-week-old baby girl (photo below) and bonded with new dads. He really liked the class and learned a lot!

It was Brett's birthday this week! Happy birthday my love.

Also in week 37 we worked a lot and cleaned the house getting ready for the big Thanksgiving Holiday Madness. More on that in the above posting.

Week 36

My good friend, Tara Nalty, hosted a Blessing Way for me and then a Daddy Diaper Shower for Brett on Sunday Nov 15th. The Blessing Way was an intimate girls-only ritual blessing me and the baby with words, roses, amulets, massage and the casting of my belly in plaster. A very special Thank You to the girls who participated: Tara, Dana, Nyah, Erika, Shannon, and Sarah Burns. Before the blessing we had a beautiful catered lunch of soup, finger sandwiches, salad and ginger champagne cocktails; after the blessing, Brett's Shower was catered with dinner of beef stew. A crew showed up bearing diapers, presents, beer and whisky. People stayed until almost midnight, but I was in bed by 10pm. Here are some photos.
